In the left section of the central panel, a man is tempted by a black woman—an encounter symbolising sin as perceived in the Middle Ages, when people of African descent were often unjustly associated with evil. The pair rides upon a duck, emblem of folly and drunkenness, while a vibrant kingfisher looks on.
