Raise a goblet to our union! A chalice (from Latin calix 'mug', borrowed from Ancient Greek 'cup') or goblet is an ancient form of stemware, whose use dates back further than the Roman Empire. Originally goblets were earthenware and through time other materials were introduced into the stemware family. The Roman Empire was fond of the goblet and created many permutations of it in many materials.
